View Full Version : DNS setup for VPS domain(s)?

I purchased the U100 VPS hosting yesterday and have attempted to setup my first client and domain (which would be myself) on my shared IP. The knowledge base said I must contact Gate Support to have them setup the DNS for the newly added domain in their DNS servers and that I must go to my domain registrar and set the name servers for my domain to

ns1.primarydns.com
ns2.primarydns.com

Is this correct? And will I have to do this every time I add a new domain for a client on my VPS?

I changed my name servers at my registrar yesterday afternoon around 2:00 pm, but I still can't access my domain. Do I have to transfer my domain from Go Daddy to Gate/TuCows?

I have the same question. I already have my domains registered else where and have seen two name serves I should point to. Which one is correct:

ns1.primarydns.com
ns2.primarydns.com

or

ns1.gate.com
ns2.gate.com

I believe both statements are correct. Though I'm new here myself so I could be wrong. (If I'm not, I think they should add a more automated way of doing things.)

Since I don't like having to ask people to set up stuff like that for me, I use FreeDNS (freedns.afraid.org I believe) for name servers for my domains. (The downside is that if you go with a non-premium account, anybody can make subdomains of your domain and have them point where-so-ever they want. I decided I was willing to make that trade-off though.)

I believe the ns1.primarydns.com servers are for those of us with VPS or dedicated hosting accounts, and the ns1.gate.com servers are for those on shared hosting plans.

I sent a support request to them, and they added my domain to the primarydsn.com servers. I suppose I'll have to do this every time I add a domain!

I always prefer to be in control of my own destiny when it comes to DNS, after all it is the most vital part of any domain management. This is the result of experience over the years of having to wait days or weeks for technical support at various ISPs to react.

So I set the primary and secondary DNS records in the domain registration to two PCs I control. In this case I set the VPS server as primary and my local server (hosted on xDSL) as secondary.
The list-order of primary/secondary DNS servers for a domain registration isn't too significant because a round-robin system is generally used for basic DNS load balancing in most cases.

I then set my local server as the master that contains the zone file for the domain and set the VPS to be a slave which is listed in the zone file as a names server (NS) and allow zone transfers only to name servers (this stops anyone else from grabbing the zone file and potentially discovering sensitive information about the domain).

This way, all the core details for the domain are where I can get to them instantly, and the slave (VPS DNS server) will be sent a zone change notify when I make changes, which causes it to fetch the updated zone file from the master.

In case I want to use the VPS as the master for a zone I've set an Access Control List (ACL) containing my local server's public IP subnet mask in Plesk System>Server>DNS>Common Allow Zone Transfer ACL

e.g. a.b.c.d/29

I'm having the exact same issue. I created two clients and updated the nameservers w/ GoDaddy and nothing. Neither one works. I originally setup the account (u100) w/o a domain but called Gate yesterday morning and told them which domain I wanted to use as I guess the primary domain. It's now the following day and nothing works. Suggestions?

Yeah. Cancel your VPS with Gate. They obviously don't care about us. My company would have bought another ten or so u100's but Gate just doesn't provide what we need for OUR customers. Sorry.

I also set up without a domain and I emailed yesterday to set a domain that woul. I am wondering if we must add that domain to the Account Management System and make a DNS entry there. I understand that for accounts we add through Plesk it is normal procedure to use the Account Management System but here this is the main domain of the VPS.
Thanks
