I just established a new account about 4 days ago, just finished with configurations and got it all setup and running... only to find out that the IP provided is blacklisted in SORBS. Should they be giving out blacklisted IP address to new customers? Is there an easy to get it changed without switching servers?

Am I alone?

If your IP is listed in SORBS you should follow the procedure given by SORBS to to get your IP removed. I know for sure Gate will not assign you a new IP just because it is listed in a third party RBL. If they say your IP is dynamic let tech support know so they can have let their security guy know to contact SORBS. Other than that I would imagine if they gave out new IPs for anyone that gets blacklisted their whole IP block would get listed.

That would make sense only if the IP got blacklisted while I had ownership, but this IP was already blacklisted before I got it. I shouldn't have to go through this hassle as a new customer. Looks like SORBS has blocked a huge range of IP's from here.

It seems some sort of problems exist no matter where you go.

Agreed you shouldn't have to, but this is true of the industry as a whole as far I've been in it. There will always be people abusing the system and one would run out of IP addresses not assigning them to being used. You also need to maintain these IP addresses in use or risk losing them. http://www.arin.net

HI,

We are unable to issue your account a new ip because it is on a 3rd party RBL. It is fairly simple to get your vps IP address removed from the black list, the steps to do this should be on the sites. (The steps vary depending on which one you are referring too)

So I've had a customer complain already that they cannot successfully send mail to a few recipients. I've gone to the SORBS database and have begun the steps to remove my IP but SORBS shows that they have blocked the whole network, not just my IP address:

Netblock: 216.110.190.0/24 (216.110.190.0-216.110.190.255)
Record Created: Sat May 20 10:36:03 2006 GMT
Record Updated: Sat May 20 10:36:03 2006 GMT
Additional Information: [MU] Dynamic/Generic IP/rDNS address, use your ISPs mail server or get rDNS set to indicate static assignment.
Currently active and flagged to be published in DNS

Is this something that gate.com will handle? If so please let me know, conversely please let me know if not. I don't want to spend money on a VPS that will remain blacklisted in SORBS. Having multiple clients I plan on putting on my server, I really don't want to get stuck with you guys and my clients be in this predicament.

I'm quite concerned considering the spam record was created in 2006 and nothing has been done till now it looks like. I would like to know something soon.

Thanks

Did you contact gate support? In my previous post I advised that if sorbs is blocking you because think the IP is dynamic then there security admin will need to contact sorbs on your behalf.

Could you provide your IP address and member ID please.

Look, this needs to be fixed. It is easier and much more efficient if Gate.com actually handles this with SORBS. Please, please help!

Here's the feedback I got from SORBS while trying to do it myself. Please note that the forward AND reverse DNS must have a TTL of 43200 or greater. When I called tech support about this they told me that they could not set the TTL of the reverse DNS for my IP address which made no sense to me. Without the TTL set to 43200 or greater I cannot use the automated process for removing my IP address from the DUHL.

I'm a robot writing you on behalf of the SORBS' admins. The reason
you're getting this automated response, is our desire to provide you
with consistent and fast responses. I'm prepared to correctly analyze
most of the cases appearing in the DUHL queue.

You might want to keep your responses as short as possible (and to
trim my own responses) to help humans better serve you should the need
arise.

I've analyzed the following IP space, based on the text of your
request:

216.110.190.36/32

Not all the IP space you requested can be delisted at this
time. Please review carefully our FAQ, located at the following URI

http://www.sorbs.net/faq/dul.shtml

For efficiency, I review segments of IP space that may be larger than
what you requested, although I will delist your IP space once it is
eligible, regardless of its surroundings. In this case, I found the
following IP space, not eligible for delisting:

216.110.190.0/30 216.110.190.4/31 216.110.190.7/32 216.110.190.8/31
216.110.190.11/32 216.110.190.13/32 216.110.190.16/32 216.110.190.18/32
216.110.190.20/32 216.110.190.22/32 216.110.190.24/32 216.110.190.26/32

216.110.190.248/29

Please review our FAQ very carefully for actions you might need to
take. You may want to review your rDNS information for these IP
ranges. When checking the rDNS information, please don't forget to
consider the TTL. It must be 43200 seconds or longer.

I'm now marking this request as 'answered' as I think there's nothing
more for me to do. If you feel otherwise, please reply to this message
to re-open your ticket. In particular, if you change your rDNS
information.

Best regards.

After having no response from this forum since my last post 4 days ago, I've decided to call. I was on the phone with tech support and spoke with a man named Clinton. After explaining my problem to him he put me on hold a few times and has now told me that he has forwarded my problem to the admins and they will take a look at it. My clients, who are hosting with me, are looking for answers, and I have none to give them. I'm hoping an "admin" can fix this issue within a timely manner.

It was suggested to me to use Google Apps for the email server of my clients. I do not think that this is an acceptable long term solution as I'm paying for a service from Gate.com that actually has a problem but is not being fixed, at least not in a tolerable or observable manner by myself.

HOWEVER...

Google Apps IS KEWL! So for anyone having this same issue, client recipients not being able to receive emails because of SORBS blocking your IP address, you should check out Google Apps. Linky: https://www.google.com/a/ It does the job that Gate.com seems to be failing at, and most importantly it does it for free.

Good luck!

Hello,

I only suggested google apps as a possible work around to your sorbs issue. All of the information about the sorbs black list has been sent to our security adviser to get our ip range removed.

I also have the same problem - my VPS IP is blacklisted by sorbs - I contacted sorbs, but only received an automated response. I am sure that Gate.com should deal with it by requesting sorbs to delist the whole IP range, rather each individual customer will try to do it.

here is an extract from the SORBS FAQ:
"Delisting is a manual process and will only be performed when the owner of the IP address block contacts the SORBS support system to indicate the addresses listed are statically assigned.
ISP's are encouraged to submit lists of both their dynamically and statically assigned address ranges through the SORBS support system. We strive to ensure that there are no incorrect listings. This can be done at any time as the database changes from day to day whenever updates are required."

I tried to delist my IP by myself by sumbitting a request at http://www.de.sorbs.net/cgi-bin/support.

here is their response:
----------------

Please do set your TTL to 43200 (86400 is even better) as outlined in
the FAQ.

-lem
SORBS Support
----------------

The current TTL (time to live) at Gate's DNS servers is 3600 and for some reason they don't want to change it. So we are stuck. I think they (Gate) must delist the whole IP range by applying to SORBS.

Got a little nervous when I read this but my IP is not listed, Here's the response from SORBS:

Listed as an exception and therefore NOT blocked.
